- Sakura Guest House: a remodelled traditional house that opened in summer 2011, on a hill about an 18-minute walk6 from JR Takayama Station. It has an 8-bed mixed dorm, a 6-bed female dorm6 and a twin room.
- Natural Onsen Hostel Hidamari no Yu: a hot-spring spa with a men’s futon dorm, a mixed bunk dorm and small private rooms such as the 8 m²1 Sumire room. The spa says its water comes from 1,000 m underground7.
- Hida Takayama Tenshoji Youth Hostel: a temple-affiliated youth hostel8 on the eastern outskirts, covered further down this page.
Sanmachi, the heart of the old town, is a 129 to 15-minute10 walk from JR Takayama Station, so a bed by the station still leaves the old lanes close.

A dorm bed in Takayama costs about what it does elsewhere in Japan, where the national tourism site puts very basic beds from ¥3,50011 (about US$22) a night.

What to know before you compare:
- Japanese rates are usually quoted per person, not per room8, so check the basis before you set a hostel against a hotel.
- Backpackers Hida Takayama’s ¥2,963 (about US$19) (checked October 2026) is Trip.com’s average for stays on 25–31 October12.
- Hidamari no Yu’s range is Rakuten Travel’s guide figure for the past 30 days, with the bath fee charged separately1.
- Tenshoji’s older rates of ¥3,400 (about US$22) and ¥3,7008 (about US$24) still appear on Wikivoyage; the hostel association’s page has the newer figures.
- K’s House Takayama Oasis quotes its rates per person per night, with 10% tax13 included.

Takayama City charges an accommodation tax on stays from 1 October 202514, paid on top of your bed at hotels, ryokan, simple lodgings and registered minpaku4.

What it means for a hostel stay:
- The band depends on the room-only rate plus any service charge14, leaving out meals and consumption tax.
- Children are exempt until the first 31 March after they turn 124.
- You pay it to the accommodation, with the room charge4; some places take it with prepayment, others on site14.
- At K’s House, the tax (typically ¥100–20015 (under US$1 to about US$1) (checked October 2026) per person per night, Hostelworld says) isn’t in the booking price.

K’s House Takayama Oasis, Sakura Guest House and Tenshoji all open check-in at 15:005. The evening cut-off differs, so time a late train around it.

Temple youth hostel
Hida Takayama Tenshoji Youth Hostel
The Takayama youth hostel at Tenshoji reopened from 1 April 2026 as room only (no meals)16, in a temple area on a hill east of the centre.

- Location: about 10 minutes’ walk from the Miyagawa riverside morning market and 20 minutes3 on foot from JR Takayama Station.
- Rooms: all Japanese-style, with family rooms16, and 60 beds3 in all.
- Private rooms: price on request16, so ask the hostel.
- Membership: you may need a small membership fee11 to join the international youth hostel network when you book.

Who a hostel stay suits, and who it doesn’t
A hostel here works for adults and older children staying a few nights. Families with small children have fewer choices.
It suits
- Longer stays: K’s House says it’s cosy like home and suited to multi-night stays17.
- Day-trippers: K’s House calls itself a base for Shirakawago, Shin-Hotaka, Kamikochi, Hida-Furukawa, Norikura, Hida Folk Village and Gero Onsen5.
- Self-caterers: K’s House serves no food, but the guest kitchen is open any time18.
- Onsen fans on a budget: Hidamari no Yu opens 7:30 to 23:00 and runs a free shuttle bus7; adult entry is ¥1,15019 (about US$7), and overnight guests usually pay the bath fee separately20.
- Older travellers: youth hostels welcome travellers of all ages, and most have mixed and single-sex11 floors.
It doesn’t suit
- Families with small children: children aged 6 or younger15 can’t stay in K’s House dorms (per Hostelworld), and K’s House gives no child discount18. Another hostel in the table takes only guests aged 12 and over21. Tenshoji’s family rooms16 are the exception.
- Anyone wanting meals included: Tenshoji is room only16, and K’s House serves no food18.
- Hot-spring inn seekers: for ryokan in the mountains, try the Hirayu Onsen village guide (Hirayu is the western gateway to Kamikochi22) or where to stay in Okuhida Onsen.

Shirakawa-go: 50 minutes by bus22
Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is 50 minutes by bus north of Takayama, and the Shinhotaka Ropeway lifts you to 2,156 m22. Both tours below meet by JR Takayama Station, a short walk from the station-side hostels.

What is not allowed in a hostel in Takayama?
Smoking indoors, mainly: Hostelworld says it's strictly banned inside K's House, and Sakura Guest House is non-smoking with a smoking area in the garden. Some Japanese hostels set curfews; K's House has none.
Can I drop my bags before check-in?
At K's House Takayama Oasis, yes: it holds luggage from 8:00 until check-in, and stores it free until 20:00 on check-out day.
Can I do laundry at a hostel?
K's House Takayama Oasis has a washing machine and dryer for ¥500.
