Takayama attractions: sights, fees and how to reach them

Old town to Alps

The sights, in town and out

Takayama’s sights split neatly: old merchant streets and a temple you can walk to, a folk village a short bus ride away, and day trips by bus to the gassho villages and the Okuhida mountains.

Hida no Sato entry: ¥70015

Sanmachi Suji old town

Sanmachi is the heart of Takayama1, and it’s why most people come: a well-preserved old quarter of Edo-style streets2. Several sake breweries sit in and around the district, and every morning, merchants set up market stalls1.

The Sanmachi Suji visitor guide covers the streets and how to visit. If you’d like a local to show you round, the small-group old town walk with a café stop starts at the Jinya-mae Morning Market, and the sake tasting at a historic brewery is an easy add-on.

Kusakabe Folk Museum

The Kusakabe Folk Museum is the townhouse of the Kusakabe family, merchants who served the magistrate’s office3. Hida master carpenter Kawajiri Jisuke built it in 1879 in faithful Edo-period style, and it’s now a national Important Cultural Property3.

  • Address: 1-52 Ōshin-machi, Takayama3
  • Hours: 10:00–16:00, closed every Tuesday3
  • Entry: ¥1,000 (about US$6) for adults, ¥500 (about US$3) for high-school students and ¥3003 (about US$2) for elementary and junior-high pupils

Yoshijima House

The Yoshijima family were wealthy merchants who ran a money exchange and a sake brewery5, and their house is the old town’s other merchant home to step inside. Travel guides list entry at ¥5006 (about US$3) for adults and ¥3007 (about US$2) for elementary-school children.

Hours are listed as 9:30–16:007. These figures come from guidebooks rather than the house, so confirm at the tourist office before you plan around them.

Hida Kokubunji temple

Hida Kokubunji is a 5-minute walk8 from JR Takayama Station. The temple says it has about 1,300 years of history and is the oldest temple in the region9, and its three-storey pagoda is the only pagoda in Hida10.

  • The grounds are free to walk around11; only the main hall is charged.
  • Main hall: ¥500 (about US$3) for adults, ¥40010 (about US$3) for elementary and junior-high pupils.
  • Main hall hours: 9:00–16:00, closed from 31 December to 1 January10.

Hida no Sato folk village

Hida no Sato (Hida Folk Village) preserves more than 30 historic buildings from the Hida area1, including six thatched-roof farmhouses12 with Hida gassho-zukuri houses among them. Families with small children can borrow strollers13.

The Sarubobo bus loops from Takayama Nohi Bus Center (JR Takayama Station) to Hida no Sato and back14. Entry is ¥700 (about US$4) (checked October 2026) for adults and ¥200 (about US$1) for elementary and junior-high pupils, and the village is open all year, 8:30 to 17:0015.

Short on time? A day tour pairing Hida Folk Village with caves and the ropeway covers the folk village and Okuhida in one go.

Takayama Festival

Takayama has two well-known festivals, in spring and autumn1. The page on the Takayama Festival in spring and autumn has the dates, times and floats.

Shirakawa-go (Ogimachi)

Shirakawa-go became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, and Ogimachi still has more than 100 gassho-style buildings, with people still living in them16. The Nohi Bus from Takayama Bus Terminal (Takayama Nohi Bus Center) takes about 50 minutes and costs ¥2,80017 (about US$18) (checked October 2026) one-way.

  • Walking around the village is free18.
  • Going inside some houses costs ¥300–400 (about US$2–3), and the open-air museum ¥80018 (about US$5).
  • The Gassho-zukuri Minkaen museum is about a 15-minute walk19 from the bus terminal.

Ogimachi Castle observatory

The Ogimachi Castle ruins are earthworks on a 60-metre hill, all that’s left of a small mountain castle, and the observatory is free and can be visited on foot at any time20. Most people take the shuttle and walk a short way from the last stop20.

  • The shuttle leaves from in front of the Wada House18.
  • It runs every 20 minutes from 10:00 to 14:40, with a break from 12:00 to 13:0018.
  • It costs ¥200 (about US$1) one-way, paid in cash on the bus18.

Gokayama and Washi no Sato

The World Heritage site is three villages: Ogimachi in Shirakawa-go, and Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama21. Kaetsuno Bus’s Gokayama-Shirakawa-go Free Pass costs ¥4,000 (about US$26) for adults and is valid for two days22.

Gokayama Washi no Sato, in Nanto, Toyama, works on washi paper at every stage, from growing the raw materials to processing the paper23. It has a shop, a restaurant and a café, and it’s open 9:00–17:0024.

Its papermaking workshop costs ¥1,00025 (about US$6) and you leave with 3 postcards23.

Shinhotaka Ropeway

The Shinhotaka Ropeway takes you up to 2,156 m above sea level1. A one-way ticket on both ropeways, Shinhotaka Onsen to Nishi-Hotaka-guchi, costs ¥2,400 (about US$15) for adults and ¥1,20026 (about US$8) for children.

The bus routes are on the page about getting to the ropeway from Takayama, and the location overview shows where Shinhotaka Ropeway is in relation to town. You can book a round-trip ropeway e-ticket, or join a guided ropeway and Kamikochi day tour.

Okuhida Onsen

Okuhida Onsengo is five hot spring areas: Hirayu, Fukuji, Shin-Hirayu, Tochio and Shin-Hotaka28. It has the third-largest volume of hot spring water in Japan29, and Hirayu and Shin-Hotaka are inside the national park30.

In winter, Okuhida suggests relaxing in the hot springs after a full day of skiing31. For Hida beef out here, Yoshimoto is a long-established restaurant near Hirayu Bus Terminal serving a wide range of Hida beef dishes32. The Okuhida hot-spring villages in detail page covers each one.

Okuhida Bear Ranch

The Okuhida Bear Ranch has more than 100 bears, and they don’t hibernate, so you can see them all year33. The ranch says its treat-feeding appeals to both adults and children33.

Take the Nohi Bus toward Shinhotaka Onsen from Takayama Bus Center (1 hour 20 minutes), get off at Kuma Bokujo-mae and walk about 5 minutes34. Entry is ¥1,400 (about US$9) for adults and ¥70033 (about US$4) for children.

  • April to November: 8:00–17:0033
  • December to March: 9:00–16:30, last entry 30 minutes before closing33
  • Closed on Wednesdays from December to March33

Plan around these

Tips

  • Eat Hida beef while you’re here. It comes from cattle raised in Gifu Prefecture for at least 14 months and is known above all for its marbling35.
  • Use Takayama as a base. K’s House pitches its Takayama Oasis hostel as a base for Shirakawago, Shin-Hotaka, Kamikochi, Hida-Furukawa, Norikura, Hida Folk Village and Gero Onsen36.
  • Pack for snow in winter. Takayama gets constant snowfall, and temperatures sometimes fall below -10 °C2.
  • Driving to Shirakawa-go? Seseragi Park parking costs ¥2,000 (about US$13) for a car and opens 8:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:3037.

Questions people ask

How long should you allow at Shirakawa-go and Hida no Sato?

Shirakawa-go's tourism association says a walk round the village takes about 2 to 3 hours. Hida no Sato says its suggested route takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour.

Can you borrow a wheelchair or stroller at Hida no Sato?

Yes: ask at reception for wheelchairs, electric carts or strollers, in limited numbers. Wheelchairs and electric carts aren't lent from December to March because of snow, and disability certificate holders get in free.
