Nohi Bus express buses pull in at the Takayama Hida Bus Center, next to JR Takayama Station11. Book before you go:
Take the Nohi Bus: it links Kanazawa Station and Takayama via Shirakawa-go for ¥4,20012 (about US$27) one way. Buses from Shirakawa-go go on to Kanazawa, Toyama or Takaoka12, so you can break the trip in the village.
From Takayama, the Shirakawa-go leg takes about 50 minutes, with 16 round trips a day12. Some of those need a reservation, and mobile tickets are sold for non-reserved buses only12.
Prefer someone else to handle the logistics? Compare Shirakawa-go half-day tours from Kanazawa and Takayama.
Highway buses also run to Takayama from Matsumoto13. Get off at Hirayu Bus Terminal, about 1½ hours14 from Matsumoto, and you’re at the western gateway to Kamikochi13. The Hirayu Onsen page covers staying there.
If you’d rather not juggle connections, these group day tours leave from Nagoya and take in Takayama’s old town and Shirakawa-go. To go on your own instead, follow this day itinerary for Takayama.

What it means if you’re coming by road:
On the rail side, the Takayama Line between Sugihara and Inotani was suspended from 18 March 202625. The Gifu Shimbun reported on 26 May 2026 that JR Central would reopen it from the first train on 30 May 202626.

Pick a bed from these Takayama hotels by area and budget, and plan your walks with the Takayama map with sightseeing spots.
