Takayama is in Gifu Prefecture, near the northern Japan Alps3, at about 573 m4. It is also part of Japan’s heavy snow area5, so the season matters more than you’d expect.

  • Winter: Snow totals 305 cm a year, and January is the snowiest month at 117 cm1. Snow cover reaches 45 cm in February1, and nights sometimes fall below -10 °C3.
  • Spring: Snow thins out through March and April. May is the sunniest month, with 189.2 hours1 of sun.
  • Summer: The rainy season (tsuyu)5 brings humid, wet weather. July is the wettest month at 260.9 mm1, and August averages 24.4 °C5.
  • Autumn: Colourful maple foliage5 is the draw. Fall foliage plus the autumn festival makes October the classic pick.
