Route logic

Why the stops run in this order

First hop: about 4 min by car, 2 km5

Every stop sits in Sanmachi, the heart of Takayama city4, so the hops between them are short. The first is the longest: Takayama Station to Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan is about 4 min by car, 2 km5.

  • Float hall, then Yoshijima. Yoshijima Traditional House is about 2 min by car, 0.5 km5 from the float hall.
  • The market while it’s open. The Miyagawa Morning Market comes next, about 1 min by car, 0.3 km5 from Yoshijima.
  • Sanmachi Suji, then lunch. From the market, Sanmachi Suji is about 2 min by car, 0.5 km, and the lunch stop, Sanmachi, is about 1 min by car, 0.1 km5 beyond it.
  • Takayama Jinya to finish. Takayama Jinya is about 1 min by car, 0.3 km from lunch and about 2 min by car, 1 km5 from the station. A visit takes about 30 minutes6, and the ticket window shuts 30 minutes before closing time7.

If lunch is Hida beef, it comes from cattle raised in Gifu Prefecture for at least 14 months, and it’s known above all for its marbling8. Takayama Jinya sits near the Nakabashi Bridge9, the bridge with bright vermilion railings10 over the Miyagawa River.

The Miyagawa Morning Market is open all year round3; for the stalls and the walk from the station, see Miyagawa market hours and access, and for souvenirs, what to buy at Takayama markets. The old streets have their own page too: walking Sanmachi Suji, where several sake breweries4 sit in and around the district.

Want company? A small-group old town walk with a local guide covers the market and the old town, and a sake tasting at a historic brewery fits neatly after lunch.

On foot or by bus

Getting there and back without a car

The drives in the plan are routing estimates; on foot, the old town is close to Takayama Station.

Machinami bus: ¥100 a ride27

  • Sanmachi: a 1211 to 15-minute12 walk from JR Takayama Station.
  • Takayama Jinya: about a 10-minute walk13 from the station and Takayama Nohi Bus Center.
  • Machinami bus: it loops from Takayama Nohi Bus Center past Takayama Jinya and the Old Town, and city line buses need no reservation14.
  • Taxi: in Takayama you have to call a taxi company or wait at a taxi stand15. On weekends, at year-end and on snowy days, waits can run to more than an hour15.

Hida no Sato (Hida Folk Village) is the closest. It preserves more than 30 historic buildings from the Hida area4, and a walk round takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour16. The gassho-zukuri farmhouse museum is open all year round17.

Shirakawa-go day trip from Takayama

Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site4, is the easiest of the farmhouse villages to reach by public bus. The Nohi Bus fare is ¥2,8001 (about US$18) (checked October 2026) one-way.

  1. Board at Takayama Nohi Bus Center

Express buses leave from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center at JR Takayama Station. Some of the 16 daily round trips need a reservation.

  2. Ride to Shirakawa-go

The bus takes about 50 minutes and costs ¥2,800 one-way.

  3. Start at Wada House

The largest gassho-zukuri house in Shirakawa-go is about a 3-minute walk from the bus terminal. Adults pay ¥400 in cash.

  4. Walk the village

A walk round takes about 2 to 3 hours. The Minkaen open-air museum is about 15 minutes' walk from the terminal and costs ¥800.

  5. Ride up to the observatory

The shuttle leaves from in front of Wada House every 20 minutes and costs ¥200 one-way, cash on the bus.

  6. Bus back to Takayama

Allow slack: Nohi Bus warns that Shirakawa-go line buses may be significantly delayed.

The village is mainly geared to day tourists19, and outside light-up nights it does not accept tourists at night, apart from overnight guests20. With a hire car, the drive is about an hour by expressway19.

The same bus line carries on to Kanazawa Station, ¥4,2001 (about US$27) one-way from Takayama, if you’d rather end the day there. For the village itself, see the full Shirakawa-go visiting guide, or compare guided Shirakawago tours before you book.

Hirayu Onsen, Kamikochi and the Shinhotaka Ropeway

Hirayu is the western gateway to Kamikochi4, so a Hirayu Onsen day trip pairs well with the valley. The bus takes about 90 minutes from Takayama via Hirayu Onsen, and the Kamikochi buses run from 17 April to 15 November 202622 (checked October 2026).
