Old government seat

What you’re looking at

1692 to 18685

The Jinya was the seat of government for Hida for 176 years, from 1692 until 18685, when the region came under direct shogunate rule. The official site says 25 generations5 of magistrates carried out their duties here.

It calls itself the only provincial magistrate’s office in Japan whose main building still stands6.

  • The building stayed in use as a government office until 19695.
  • It was named a national historic site in 19295.

January is the snowiest month in town, with a normal 117 cm8, so a winter visit comes with a snowy garden.

Free guided tours

The Jinya offers free guided tours9, with Japanese- and English-language guides listed. You book at the ticket counter or by phone9.

Tours last about 15–20, 30–40 or 50–60 minutes9, depending on the type. Guides are limited9, so phone ahead if you want a particular time rather than turning up and hoping.

Getting there

About 10 minutes' walk4

The address is 1-5 Hachikenmachi4, in the old town near Nakabashi Bridge.

  • On foot: about 10 minutes4 from Takayama Station or the Nohi Bus Center.
  • By car: the Jinya has no parking of its own4, so use city car parks.
  • From Tokyo: 4 to 4.5 hours via Nagoya, as the Shinkansen does not run to Takayama itself10.

For buses and walking routes in town, see the station and local transport guide. The day trip to Takayama from Tokyo page covers planning.

Access, children and older visitors

Entry is free for anyone aged 18 or younger1. The building is old, and some parts are not barrier-free3.

  • Four steps3 lead up to the entrance room. A ramp is put in place3 for visitors who find them difficult.
  • Most of the interior is tatami, so wheelchair users switch to an indoor-only wheelchair3.
  • There is only one multipurpose toilet usable from a wheelchair inside3, plus another in the plaza in front.

Outside the gate

Morning market and what’s nearby

A market is held right outside the gate. The Jinya-mae stalls sell fresh green vegetables, dried foods and homemade pickles11.

  • 7:00–12:00 from April to November11
  • 8:00–12:00 from December to March11

Go in the morning: the stalls run until noon11 and the Jinya opens at 8:45 a.m.1 For the riverside stalls, see the morning markets in Takayama guide.

On foot from the station, Sanmachi Suji is a 15-minute walk12. The Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan, for the festival floats, is 20–25 minutes13 from the station, and the shrine puts adult admission at ¥1,00014 (about US$6). Read the Takayama autumn festival guide if your dates match.

A small-group old town walk meets at this market. For a full day with guided old-town walks and Shirakawa-go, try this tour:
