What’s on the stalls

About 30 tents4

The market is a line of white tents, about 304 of them, along both banks of the Miya River. They stand between the Kajibashi and Yayoibashi bridges2. Japan’s national tourism site says the market has existed for more than two centuries2.

You’ll find:

  • Vegetables, fruit, pickles and spices (vegetables, fruits, pickles and spices1), including alpine vegetables2.
  • Fruit that follows the calendar: summer peaches and autumn apples2.
  • Sarubobo dolls and Ichii itto-bori wood carvings, sold straight from the craftsmen4.
  • Stylish chopsticks, alongside the local produce (produce, sarubobo dolls, chopsticks2).
  • Takeout food stalls, so you can have breakfast there5.

Chatting with stallholders in the local Takayama dialect is part of the fun5.

Getting there

10-minute walk2

The market sits on Asaichi-dori in Shimo-Sannomachi (Asaichi-dori, Shimo-Sannomachi, Takayama4). From JR Takayama Station it’s about a 10-minute walk6.

If you’d rather ride, the Machinami bus loops from Takayama Nohi Bus Center past Takayama Jinya and the Old Town7. The fare is ¥1008 (under US$1) per ride, with no child fare. Google Maps gives the address as Shimosannomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-08413.

Two markets

Miyagawa or Jinya-mae?

Takayama has a second morning market, and Japan’s national tourism site points to a market in front of Takayama Jinya2. Its stalls sell fresh green vegetables, dried foods and homemade pickles10.

If you only have time for one, pick the riverside Miyagawa market: Japan’s national tourism site calls it one of the three largest in Japan11. Then add the Jinya-mae stalls on your way to the Jinya.

After the stalls

Nearby and the rest of the morning

The market is over by noon, so do it first and the sights after.

  • Sanmachi Suji: the old merchant streets are about 2 min by car, 0.5 km12 away. Wander Sanmachi dori for the lattice-fronted houses and the sake breweries13 in the district.
  • Takayama Jinya: from April to October it opens at 8:45, and entry is ¥500, free for those aged 18 or younger14 (about US$3). See the Takayama Jinya visit planning guide for hours.
  • Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan: adult entry is ¥1,000 (about US$6), and the shrine says it is the only facility with real Takayama Festival floats on permanent display15. Read about visiting the Takayama yatai hall.
