Takayama by area

Around Takayama Station

Most of the big hotels sit within a few minutes of Takayama Station: Tokyu Stay Hida-Takayama Musubi no Yu is about 2 minutes10 away and Spa Hotel Alpina 3 minutes11. Trains from Nagoya take about 2 hours 20 minutes3; the routes are on the getting there page.

Spa Hotel Alpina has a top-floor open-air bath with a panoramic view over Takayama11, and Mercure Hida Takayama has an onsen on its top floor12. Ryokan Asunaro, 5 minutes13 from the station, serves breakfast only14, so plan on a restaurant in Takayama for dinner.

Sanmachi and the old town

Sanmachi is the heart of Takayama, with several sake breweries in and around it and market stalls every morning3. HOTEL WOOD TAKAYAMA is 0.1 km15 from the preservation district and a 12-minute walk16 from the station. Backpackers Hida Takayama (0.4 km5 from Sanmachi) and Hostel Miyagawa by Murasaki, overlooking the Miyagawa Morning Market17, are the budget beds here; compare all the hostel options and nightly rates.

Hirayu Onsen

Hirayu is one of the five18 hot-spring villages of Okuhida Onsengo, which is administered as part of Takayama City19. Most accommodation in these villages is high-end19, and many rooms have views of the Northern Alps peaks18. Hirayu no Mori is the cheaper choice, with forest cottages it pitches at small groups and families20; more on Hirayu Onsen.

Shin-Hotaka

Yarimikan sits on the Kamata River24, about 5 minutes by car9 from the Shinhotaka Ropeway, which climbs to 2,156 m3. It’s 90 minutes by car9 from Takayama IC, so plan on a car or a long transfer.

Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go is a separate village, a 50-minute drive25 from Takayama Green Hotel. Nodaniya is a gassho-zukuri minshuku taking one group per day, room only26. Shirakawa-Go INN has five private twin rooms27 and a shuttle from the bus terminal at 8:30 and 17:30, booked in advance28; if you’d rather not stay the night, the Nohi Bus tour to Shirakawa-go and Gokayama starts in Takayama.

Ryokan, hostel or hotel?

Choose a hotel for room-only flexibility near the station, a ryokan for tatami, onsen and set meals, and a hostel for the cheapest bed. Ryokan such as Yarimikan include dinner and breakfast9, while Takayama Ouan sits in between as a Japanese-style city hotel with tatami floors throughout29.

Busy dates and winter roads

When to go

Book well ahead for the busy dates. K’s House Takayama Oasis lists its high season as New Year, the summer holidays, festival week, cherry-blossom season, Golden Week, Silver Week and weekends34.

  • Autumn festival: the same applies on 8, 9 and 10 October35.

Questions people ask

Is there hiking around Takayama?

Yes: the Higashiyama Walking Course is a 3.5 km trail past temples and shrines, and the Shinhotaka Ropeway climbs to 2,156 m.

Can I pay by card everywhere?

No. Ryokan Takayama takes cash (yen) only and Nodaniya accepts no credit cards, while Backpackers Jinya takes cards and no cash.

Can I use the onsen with tattoos?

It depends: Hotel and Spa Gift TAKAYAMA bars tattoos of any size from its public bath, while Takayama Green Hotel and Mercure Hida Takayama let you in if you cover them.

Can children stay everywhere?

No. Ryokan Asunaro takes no children under 12, Machiyado Ichiryu accepts guests from 13, and Backpackers Hida Takayama is adults only.
