Eat and drink

Hida beef, sake and the morning market

Market 7am to noon, April to November9

Start at the Miyagawa Morning Market, where riverside stalls sell vegetables, fruit, pickles and spices from 7am to noon, April to November9 (checked October 2026). The market runs all year9, so winter visitors still get it. In the old town, seven sake breweries3 remain, and some offer tours and tastings.

Hida beef

Beef from cattle raised in Gifu Prefecture and fattened for at least 14 months11 by an accredited, registered producer, prized above all for its marbling10.

Where to eat it, and what else to order, is in the Takayama food and drink guide; the comparison of Hida and Kobe beef sets the two side by side.

Sights and day tours

Is Takayama worth visiting? What to do there

Higashiyama Walking Course: 3.5 km12

Yes, if old streets and mountains appeal: Japan’s national tourism organisation calls Takayama Gifu’s crown jewel and a haven for history buffs2. It also works as a base for the Japan Alps, where the Shinhotaka Ropeway climbs to 2,156 m2. Skip it if you want empty lanes: the old town is now quite touristy12.

In town, walk Sanmachi-suji, three narrow lanes of wooden buildings with sake breweries and small boutiques, then the 3.5 km12 Higashiyama Walking Course past temples and shrines. Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine runs the Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan float hall, with adult admission at ¥1,00014 (about US$6) (checked October 2026). The same ticket covers the Nikkokan next door15.
