Hida Furukawa old town: what to see, eat and how to visit
Hida Furukawa in brief
Hida Furukawa is a nearby sibling town to Takayama3, so it works as a short side trip or a quieter place to sleep. The wider city of Hida is the northernmost city in Gifu Prefecture4, and it was known as Furukawa until its 2004 merger2 with nearby villages.
Film fans may recognise it: the town was the setting for several key locations in the 20164 animated film Your Name.
Storehouses and carp

Is it the same as Takayama’s old town?
No. Takayama’s old town is Sanmachi, which the Japan National Tourism Organization calls the heart of Takayama city3. Hida Furukawa has its own, smaller quarter, and the town is small enough to get around on foot2. For the Takayama side, see Sanmachi Suji and its merchant streets.
Takayama itself is famous for its well-preserved old quarter of Edo-style streets7, so that one is worth your time too. Hida Furukawa suits you if you want fewer crowds.
