Floats, mikoshi and Nikkokan

What you see inside

4 floats on show at a time1

The hall shows real festival floats, but only 4 floats at a time, not the full set of 11 floats1. The shrine says it is the only facility with real Takayama Festival floats on permanent display2.

  • Floats: the shrine plans to change the display late March, late July and mid-November2. The latest change it lists is 12 July 20262.
  • Mikoshi: the shrine calls its portable shrine the largest in Japan, weighing 2.5 tonnes and needing 80 bearers2.
  • Nikkokan: the hall next door holds models of the buildings of Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, and it is included in the admission price3.
  • Guided tour: a shrine maiden takes visitors on a tour of the hall1.

Each neighbourhood in Takayama built its own festival float, or yatai4, so the floats differ from street to street. One travel guide gives an average visit of 30 to 60 minutes5.

Rain plan

Hall or festival?

Choose the hall if you can’t be in town on festival days. The autumn festival is held on October 9 and 10 and the spring one on April 14 and 158.

  • On festival days the official site warns of heavy crowds9.
  • In rain, the autumn marionette performance, parades and night festival are cancelled, and the festival is not postponed10. The spring festival follows the same rule9.
  • The autumn festival is Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine’s yearly harvest festival, and the festival is one of Japan’s three great float festivals11.

So the hall is your back-up if rain hits the festival. For dates and times, see festival dates and float parades.

Around the shrine

Nearby

The hall sits in the grounds of the shrine, so start with Takayama shrine access and festival timing. The shrine’s Shishi Hall is at 53-1 Sakuramachi and holds over 800 important tangible folk-cultural properties12, including lion-dance masks.

Questions people ask

How old are the Takayama floats?

No source here dates the floats themselves. The festivals began in the 16th to 17th century. The spring festival once had 16 floats and the autumn festival 15, but several were lost to fire and other causes.
