Edo-style old town

What the district is

Sanmachi is the heart of Takayama city4, and it’s the old town most people picture. It is made up of three narrow lanes5 of wooden buildings housing sake breweries and small boutiques.

The district keeps the feel of the Edo period and is an important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings2. Japan’s national tourism site calls it the closest thing to the Edo period2 outside a historical drama, and says it earns the nickname Little Kyoto6.

Be realistic, though. The old town is now quite touristy5, with lanes of shops aimed at visitors. It’s pretty, not a quiet museum street.

The preservation area covers parts of Kamiichinomachi, Kamininomachi, Kamisannomachi, Kataharamachi and Shinmeimachi 4-chome1, once a commercial centre of Hida Takayama.

On foot from the station

Getting there

Walk east from JR Takayama Station: it takes 121–15 minutes2. You don’t need a bus or taxi, and Japan’s national tourism site says the small area won’t tire you out much6.

12 min walk1

Reaching Takayama itself:

  • From Nagoya, the trip takes about 2 hours 20 minutes4.
  • From Tokyo, the Shinkansen to Nagoya and on to Takayama takes 4 to 4.5 hours5 in total. The Shinkansen doesn’t run to Takayama itself.

Sake, food, kimono

What to do in the old town lanes

Start with the sake. Seven2 breweries remain in the area, and some offer tours and tastings. You can spot them by the balls of cedar leaves1 hanging at their entrances.

Then eat. The area is popular for its many eateries serving local ingredients1, and studios around the district rent out yukata and kimono6 if you fancy dressing up for the stroll.

Japan’s national tourism site says there is enough in and around Sanmachi to fill an entire day2, so don’t treat it as a quick stop. The Google Maps listing covers the street only; shops and breweries keep their own hours.
