Farmhouses on the hill

What you see at Hida no Sato

Hida Folk Village is a collection of old Hida houses, gassho-zukuri farmhouses among them, rebuilt on a hillside around a large pond. The village overlooks the Takayama Valley4, so the setting does half the work.

  • 4 of the buildings1 are national Important Cultural Properties.
  • The site presents six thatched-roof farmhouses5, each with its own character.
  • The grounds cover about 99,000 m²2.
  • Experts demonstrate local crafts such as weaving and wood carving6.

You can try some of the crafts for a small fee6 at the Hida Takayama Crafts Experience Center. Because the loop is short, this is an easy morning or afternoon add-on from Takayama rather than a full day.

Combine with the Alps

Going with a tour

The village on its own is a cheap bus ride, so a tour is worth considering when you want more in the same day. This one covers Hida Folk Village, caves and the Shinhotaka Ropeway in Okuhida, and meets at Takayama Station.
