From the station

Getting there on foot

Walk from JR Takayama Station: the official tourism site gives 20 minutes2 to the float hall in the shrine grounds. Google Maps puts the shrine at 178 Sakuramachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-08581.

20 minutes on foot3

Sanmachi, the heart of town, is a 12-minute walk4 from the station, so the shrine sits a little further out. Plan on walking, as no bus route is listed for this stretch.

Inside the grounds

The float hall in the shrine grounds

The float hall holds the 11 floats2 of the autumn Takayama Festival, but don’t expect to see them all. The hall swaps them three times a year, in March, July and November, and shows only 42 at a time.

The Higashiyama Walking Course is a 3.5 km9 trail past Takayama’s temples and shrines. For a soak afterwards, see getting to takayama onsen and the okuhida onsen area hot springs at Hirayu. The full list is on the things to do page.

Guided morning walk

The shrine is an easy walk on your own, so book a guide for the commentary, not for the route. This early walk visits Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine and the Higashiyama trail, then ends at the Miyagawa Morning Market.
