Self-drive

Renting a car at the station

Drive on the left17

Toyota Rent a Car Takayama Ekimae is a 1-minute walk from the West Exit (Hakusan-guchi), at 1-319 Showamachi16.

  • Hours: 8:00–20:00 from 4 January to 31 December16
  • New Year hours: 9:00–17:30 from 1 to 3 January16
  • Phone: 0577-36-611016

Before you pick up the keys:

  • You must get an International Driving Permit before leaving home, and it lets you drive for one year17 from arrival.
  • Permits issued under other treaties, such as the 1968 Vienna Convention, aren’t valid in Japan18.
  • Drivers from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan need an original licence plus a Japanese translation17 instead.
  • Traffic drives on the left17, and most rental companies rent out ETC toll cards.

Driving in winter

Winter brings constant snowfall5, and the official tourism site warns against driving a rental car on normal tyres20 to Takayama in winter. Ask for winter tyres when you book.

Common mistakes and tips

  • Tight transfers in autumn: Nohi Bus warns that in the autumn sightseeing season you should allow plenty of time to change to JR trains or highway buses.
  • Expecting a bullet train all the way: the Shinkansen doesn’t run to Takayama5, so you change at Nagoya or come via Toyama.
  • Assuming the Japan Rail Pass covers everything: it’s valid on the official access page’s train lines except certain Shinkansen20, and Nozomi trains need a special ticket issued only to pass holders21.

Questions people ask

Are Hida and Takayama the same?

Not quite. Takayama is the city, and its name means 'tall mountain'; Hida is the wider area around it, and Hida Furukawa is a nearby sibling town.

Can you fly to Takayama?

Toyama Airport has flights to Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei, but its buses to Takayama are suspended. The airport bus to JR Toyama Station takes about 25 minutes.

Is there a direct bus to Kyoto or Osaka?

Yes. The Kyoto/Osaka express bus runs from Takayama Nohi Bus Center via Gujo-Hachiman and Kyoto to Osaka (Umeda/Namba).
